Introduction to Indian fusion: History, lineage and cultural context - 60 minutes

This workshop opens with a discussion on the history and cultural context of the dance forms we are drawing from, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of context and meaning imbibed in the movements. By creating a container for safe and open discussion of these important topics we become active participants in continuing to cultivate deeper cultural sensitivity. We will also explore why I call this style Magnolia Movement Arts.

Introduciton to Indian fusion technique - 60 minutes

We will learn hasta mudra (positions of the hands), pada bheda (foot positions), and the importance of expression in the context of this Indian fusion dance form, gracefully weave these elements together with the classic “belly dance” isolations we love!

This introductory class is great for beginners and experienced dancers alike, presenting practices that begin by cultivating a deep awareness of the body, from the subtle to the physical. Drawing on yogic practices of observation and concentration, we begin with simple yet powerful tools for mental clarity and breath to guide our movements. Flowing warm-ups, conditioning, and technique drills are designed to support strong body awareness and foster meaningful expression, taking us beyond physical technique and into deep relationship with each other and the Earth herself.

Magnolia Movement Arts mini choreography - 60 minutes

Deepen you're experience of the Magnolia Movement Art aesthetic by bringing this fusion technique to culmination in a short choreography.

Here, we begin to integrate the foundational techniques by artfully arranging shapes, patterns, and pathways within the body. Utilizing cyclical, rhythmic repetition as the framework for our practice, the body becomes an environment for deep learning and transformation.

Dance is not just about physical movement; it is a powerful tool for reconnection and a threshold of transformation, where the formless is given an instrument through which to express infinite possibilities of beauty.
